Another link in the chain on the Particular season, this one is made up purely using Particular (well, almost) and as demonstrated can be put to use to come up with a number of different and interesting kinds of effects, i touch on this a little in on the VFX page too.

Hi John,
Yes, Particular is a 3rd party plugin for AE, hence the ‘Particular Season’ i’m doing, there’ll be a couple more Particular tutorials coming and of course plenty of non-plugin based tutorials too. You can check out Particular at http://trapcode.com

Hi John
The particle engine is craeted by Trapcode, as a plugin for Adobe After Effects, not Particle Illusion.
Poonam Mulay, you can view the tutorial here http://rhys-works.com/tutorials/magic/ - it’s linked at the top of the page.

Loving these particular tutorials!
Problem is that I am using AE 6.5 and I can not work out how to make my version look like yours! Is it a new skin?
Also would love links to plugins for the AE.
Clicked on the links up there and it takes me to a google like website!
Cheers!

Hi zee,
Particle playground ships with After Effects, you should already have that available to you. Have a look around in your plugins folder for it, if it’s not there i’d consider contacting Adobe. I’m not sure about fce particle? Haven’t seen that around. CC particle also ships with AE and may be required to be installed separately. Particular can be downloaded at trapcode.com.

Is it possible to create this effect over a video file or background which isn’t black and have the effect not colorize the background/video? Thanks.
October 16th, 2007 at 12:38 pm
Yes, just do it on a black background first, then move the whole comp into another comp in order to flatten the layers, essentially pre-comping it, and ’screen’ it over whatever footage you’re using.

How do you make the magic smaller? It goes off of the edge of the screen and when I re-scale it, it becomes smaller but is then cut off by the invisible rectangle around it. I also want to know if it’s possible to have the magic rise upwards out of a fixed point like a kind of smoke? Thanks!

To stop it going off the edge of the screen you’d just need to tweak the wiggle expression, in fact, if you want it to rise from a fixed point you don’t really want the wiggle expression at all. Just animate the position of the light by hand the magic should go wherever you want it to.
In terms of it rising from a fixed point then you’d probably have to look at setting it to a point emitter and positioning it correctly.

I have to apologise for the excessive posting, but I’m having difficulty with my original issue. I can’t get the magic to import over a video because the black background just covers it up. I may be overseeing something very obvious, it’s just that my knowledge is fairly limited with this program. I may not be moving the composition into a new composition correctly. I don’t know, can you help me out with the ’screening’ business? Sorry and thanks again.

Hi,
Basically, once you’ve made your magic comp on a black background, you should be able to drag that whole composition to the ‘make new comp’ (or go to composition > pre-compose) to essentially flatten the whole comp down into one layer. If you bring your footage down onto that comp too, underneath the magic layer, and then look towards the magic layer’s transfer modes next to the timeline, and change it from normal to screen, that should composite your magic over your footage.
The chances are when it’s off a black background you’ll have to adjust the colours or duplicate the comp to get it to cut through as much as you’d like, but such is the way with all things.
Black is the ‘matte’ colour for visual effects, it’s like the compositing mathematical equivalent of transparency, so when you add to things (by screening) the pure black pixels are taken as transparent essentially, so you get the two things together. If you still get trouble let me know.

I’ve got it, it works great. Thank you so much! When I’ve finished my final movie, with this effect included, I’ll upload it to YouTube and post it here!
