This cool effect in After Effects was made as part of an expressions mini-site i’m working on. You can come up with a tonne of different looking effects with this so have a play around and see what you can come up with. The tutorial itself is largely just an exercise in what you can do with stacking effects in AE, with a few extra tricks thrown in such as handling cameras and a tiny bit of expression work to make our life easier. Those of you who have watched previous expression tutorials will recognise the trend i’m going with in making a controller null object to handle all our composition variables.

Hi,
CyCore effects ship with After Effects. They should be on your installation disc in a separate folder, if not installed with the program nowadays.

Hi there,
I have another problem: http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/5426/naamlooshc3.png
How can i make those green lines disappear? ( even when i save as .AVI or something like that they stay in the movie? How can i fix this?

Hi Shane,
It looks as if it’s the demo plugin overlay of some plugin you haven’t installed the key for, CC perhaps. Plugins typically overlay a cross onto footage when using demo versions to encourage users to buy the full version.

Hello,
I would like to convert this amazing tutorial to another program that I’m using (GIMP) in order to share with other people that don’t know how to convert this amazing tutorial.
Do you allow me to convert this tutorial? You will be credited and it will be posted only on 3 places. I’ll be thatnkful if you will aproove since this would be a big contribution to our community.
I’ll wait for an answer (hoping for a “yes”) and I’m willing to credit you in every way you’ll ask.
Thanks,

Hi.
It’s a great tutorial and I’m trying to make a tunnel of my own. But somethings wrong with the tutorial-mov. It’s missing the last 1/4 of the video??? I could really use that last 1/4!!

Hi Jake,
I’m not sure what might be the problem; i just played the movie through at my end and it loaded all the way and played fine. It could have been a tempoary problem perhaps.

Hmm….that’s strange…I played it yesterday and there was a problem with the last bit. Tried again today and had same problem…well maybe I’ve got better luck tomorrow.*s*
Thanx anyway for quick answering.

Shane,
This is just the tutorial I’ve been searching for. Thank you. One question; suppose I wanted to put some curves in the tunnel - is is possible within AFX using your design?

Hi Kevin,
Those look great. One problem though, my name is Rhys, not Shane
Did you make the maps yourself?
As for corners, it’s difficult because it’s not true 3D so making it bend properly isn’t possible, though you may be able to simulate it by extending the lengths of certain sides.

Rhys,
Sorry about the name - I mis read an earlier post.
The map for the “cave” treatment started as a photograph of some rocks which I applied the Glass and Tritone plugins. On top of the rocks I placed a static layer of “vines” created using Image Hose in Painter (I animated it in AE using a Ripple plugin - kinda gives it that creepy “alive” feel).
The spaceship is an entirely different matter - just a ton of textures, photo swatches, grunge elements, fake 2D “pipes”. It’s all public domain stuff - I’ll send you a zip of the project if you’re interested?
I’m looking for some suggestions for a clever way to create the effect that happens when light shines through a camera lens - not the chromatic aberrations - but the subtle reveal of dust and scratches on the actual surface of the glass (check out Pierre Michel’s “Fire Flower” at about one minute 2 seconds). It’s one of those effects that adds that little extra layer of realism to a shot.
BTW, love your site and tuts!
Cheers,
Kevin
